The second biggest festival in Chippenham has been scrapped due to poor ticket sales and mammoth debts.

The Chippenham Festival, which had been running for six years, was pulled this year and the committee has been dissolved.

The festival, second only in size to the folk festival, proved a huge hit in its first few years but in its fourth year the community-based project lost a whopping £15,000.

During its six years the festival showcased some major talent including poet Pam Ayres, children's author Dick King-Smith and magician Geoffrey Durham.

Last year, under the guidance of newly elected chairman Jane Clark, the festival managed to pay off the debt and all of the interest from the loan the previous committee had to take out.

She said that the decision to scrap the festival was one of the hardest she and the committee has had to make.

She said: "When you are only selling a fraction of the tickets, you have to know when enough is enough.

"It was very sad to finally admit we had to finish but we were down to just three committee members and it was physically impossible.

"I think that it is a great shame and a loss to the people of Chippenham because we brought in world-class artists and performers.

"At the moment there are no plans underway for a new committee to step in and try to rerun the festival."

The news that the festival has been scrapped has come as a shock to many in the town.

Dance teacher Helen Felix-Jones, 28, of Queens Crescent, said: "I think it is a shame that people are less and less interested in supporting the arts. This is a blow to Chippenham."

Fact is I think that they forgot to engage with the public. Pretty difficult to succeed when people are not aware of what is going on and whether it is accessible.

Lack of publicity before the event is the main cause of poor ticket sales. As with the Folk Festival, the organisers, who are all amateurs presumably, seem to think that because the event is high on their agenda it must be so on everybody else's.
Simply organising an event, no matter how well, will not succeed unless the paying public know about it.
A case in point is the programme for the folk festival which can be viewed online but not printed.
Wouldn't it be better to give away free programmes (at every One-stop, Costcutters, Tesco, Alldays etc)?

What Festival? QED. By the way Chippenham also has a pretty good football team, 400+ there most weeks. So if you fancy some entertainment for the family, there it is.

Entertainment for the family? Serious maxter? Who'd want to take their kids to be surrounded by foul mouthed idiots??

Don't confuse league football, with non league football!

In answer to 'chipsticks' - you obviously don't attend matches at Hardenhuish Park or you would see the vast amount of kids at each game enjoying themselves. We wrote to 17 junior schools this year and offered FREE season tickets and a vast amount took up the offer. Come along and see for yourself before you judge!

This article is pure fiction from begining to end.
There isn't a shred of truth in it!

It used to be called the Chippenham Arts Festival, and it will go ahead as planned in November this year.

Tickets will be on sale in Chippenham, and the festival will be bigger & better than ever.
