A specialist team of officers swooped on a kebab van in Chippenham last week and arrested an alleged illegal immigrant working there.

The man was working in the van, stationed at the Bumpers Farm Industrial Estate, on August 8 when officers from the Immigration Services detained him.

The kebab van, which has been stationed at the industrial estate for several years and is open almost 24 hours a day seven days a week, is the most popular in the town.

Many people take taxis from the town centre to the site just to get food.

Frequent visitor John Townsend, 19, of Pewsham said: "The guy who worked in there was always really friendly and enjoyed chatting to people around the van.

"I would have never guessed that he could be an illegal immigrant - this is crazy news.

"Everyone I know always makes a detour on their way home from nights out - taxi drivers make a fortune from the kebab van being based there.

"We are all just hoping everything gets sorted out and he comes back soon - his kebabs really are the best in the county."

The man, who is thought to be still under investigation, is known locally as Yilmaz.

Matthew White, who works part time at the Pets At Home store on Bumpers Farm said that a number of workers at the industrial estate go to the van for their lunch.

He said: "There is very often a queue at the van during the day and the guy there is always in such a good mood.

"I think it would be a great shame if the van was forced to close because of this.

"He has been here for years and we are all just hoping this all gets sorted out. Friday and Saturday nights will never be the same again if the van shuts."

The kebab van is so popular that it even has its own fan group on the social networking site Facebook. It is thought that someone else will take over the van in the meantime.

Illegal or not what stood out from from the article is that he has happy loyal customers and works long hours to earn a living.

Which is run by....Yilmaz! I buy stuff from there too, but if he's illegal, then we have to treat him accordingly.

If he is illegal he should be deported like any other illegal immigrant.
Someone else will take the spot.
Perhaps if he has been there for years it should have been dealt with a little sooner????

Kick him out.... Yes... but this guy worked hour after hour his estblishments were always spotless, and his food was excellent. and fed many a lonesome traveller and revellers in the early hours of the morning. certainly earned his cash, maybe just maybe his application to work over here will be accepted as unlike many illegals this guy was prepared to work his butt off.

By the sounds of it he isn’t an NHS tourist, he isn’t partaking in criminal activity nor taking the many benefits this country offers to wasters. Therefore I think he should have the right to stay. He may not have filled in the correct forms but he has fitted into life here well if you go by people comments on him.

'A specialist team of Officers'.

It's a good job such people were available. The task would obviously been too big for the local beat bobby...

"The guy that worked there was really friendly....I would never have guessed he was an illegal immigrant".

With logic like that (of course, illegal immigrants are NEVER friendly), it's no wonder it took so long to catch him.

An illegal is an illegal kick him out the rule should apply to all it cant be one story for one and another for the other the law is there for a reason (alledgedly) but i`m sure if he gives the police or home office extra chilli sauce a blind eye would be turned.

we have people that come over here legally and drain our finances by claiming benefits (as well as plenty of our own that dont work but get benefits)

we have some people that come over illegally and work and earn their own money and dont drain our benefits.
our system does seem to be wrong, surely if they cannot work then they shouldnt stay but if they are earning own money then whats the problem

Well the van is still open...

I wonder how many visits the surveillance team made (On expenses) before pressing the arrest button? - The Kebabs were (are) quite tasty!

Hey they took my post off, so much for freedom of speech. I was merely saying that those of you think kebab meet as "nice" obviously haven't sampled the culinary delights of Chippenham and need to get out more. Not that serving nice food allows you to break the immigration laws although reading some of your posts you'd think otherwise.

DONER kebabs contain more harmful fats than any other type of takeaway, research out today shows.
One sample of the post-pub favourite had six times more trans fats than than a burger and fries.

Its levels of the unhealthy fats were 10 times higher than those found in a portion of chicken tikka masala, tests carried out for Tonight With Trevor McDonald found.

Heart disease

Trans fats are found in hydrogenated oils used in some cooking oils and food manufacturing to preserve the shelf life of products.

It is said to have little nutritional value and has been linked to heart disease.

A doner kebab was found to contain 5.8g of trans fat per portion compared to 0.87g in a Big Mac and fries.

Sweet and sour chicken with fried rice fared the best with just 0.27g of trans fats while a chicken, bacon and mayo sandwich had 0.36g.

From the Manchester Evening News.

You have been warned (Thay are also laden with salt).

Steve, Wiltshire's comments are typical of mainstream media. People have a choice of what they eat (at the moment) and I wonder how much Mcdonalds paid to see the results in their favour. One product Mcdonalds are still happy to put in products they sell is aspartame, but mainstream media wont tell you how nasty that stuff is.
Let Yilmaz stay, he works hard and he is a human being above all else, people just love to label.
